Driving

Road conditions. Most roads and signs are adequate or better, with the main southeast coast highway two lanes in each direction from just south of Rhodes Town pastAfándou to Kolýmbia. However, getting to the far south and back in one day can be arduous, and local driving habits leave much to be desired. Since many place-names have been transliterated arbitrarily into Roman lettering and signposted at different times, you may find the same village name written several different ways as you drive, with only one rendition, perhaps, agreeing with your map. Few parts of the island remain inaccessible to a normal rental car; however, most roads have no paved verges, only dust and gravel along the sides. Many asphalt surfaces are very slick when wet, a problem aggravated by most bends being banked the wrong way to save on installing culverts.

Are we on the right road for…? Páme kalá giá…?
